What's This World Coming To?

When I was a boy, our family always travelled at Christmas time to see my grandparents. At night, as we were drifting off to sleep in their home heated by a floor furnace, all the bedroom doors were left open so the warm air could circulate. As Grandpa Puckett was settling down, we would hear him sigh and say, "Oh Lord, what's this world coming to?" When I learned from the Dallas News' Religion blog of the controversy surrounding Presidential candidate Bill Huckabee's latest ad, because it mentions Jesus in connection with Christmas, about the only thing that came to mind was Grandpa's phrase. For a followup post on the same blog, click here. For an article that argues we should see more discussion of religion on the campaign trail, not less, click here. Good post. The reaction by the media at large to Huck's Christmas ad was pretty hysterical (and sad too), but not surprising.

That seems to be what much of our world is coming to. I think more discussion of religion would be great too. The only candidate I hear it from consistently and regularly is Alan Keyes. (No disrespect to Huckabee, I like him, but Keyes has been more vocal and courageous regarding God's place in our society than anyone.)

Today it's an uphill battle when it comes to dealing with how the big media handles Christianity. We just have to persistent and not hide our faith! And don't be afraid to say, "Merry Christmas!" :-)

    God Bless,
    Dale
P.S. Just a minor correction: it's Mike, not Bill Huckabee. ;-)

  2. Thanks for correcting me, Dale, on Gov. Huckabee's first name. I have been so busy lately that I have not been able to post much and wrote that in a hurry. In any event, I think it is an interesting commentary on the evolution of this election that Gov. Huckabee would have suddenly become the front runner in the Iowa race and that people like me do not even know his first name...! He really has "come out of nowwhere." Blessings!

  3. No problem, Mark! It's an understandable mistake.

These elections can have sudden seismic shifts and last minute events can literally end up changing the world.

I remember only a little over a month ago that many commentators were already dismissing Huckabee's campaign. One would think experienced political talking-heads would know better! Many people still haven't even begun to pay much attention to the race yet. Much can happen between now and November.

    God Bless!
    Dale
